Transportation FAQ's

1. How do you calculate the cost to transport my boat?

Many factors  come into play, including: size of boat, size of equipment required, customer trailer or our trailer, distance, permits required, fuel costs, the availability of an outgoing or return load, any loading or unloading challenges, and whether the customer wishes to have the boat shrink-wrapped.

2. What if my boat doesn’t have a trailer?

We have many types of trailers to accommodate all types of boats.

3.  How far in advance do I need to schedule my transportation?

Ideally the more notice the better.  This particularly helps when your timing is flexible and an outgoing or return trip can be planned to minimize your investment.  Our usual minimum turn-around is a week in order to make all the necessary arrangements.  Exceptions may be made under special circumstances and are considered on a case by case basis.

4.  What do I need to do to prepare my boat for transport?

We have a boat transport guide on our site that we encourage all our customers to read to minimize any possible damage during the transport process.  We are available to prepare your boat for you at an additional cost.

5.  What size ranges are you equipped to transport?

At the present time we can transport modern powerboats up to 44’ and 30,000 pounds.  Vintage boats that have a plumb bow and require support from the trailer from bow to transom can be up to 40’ and 30,000 pounds.  We have size appropriate equipment to transport the most delicate canoe or rowing shell up to the largest craft that can be transported by land.

6.  Are your drivers experienced?

All our drivers have a minimum of five years experience and are specialists in the transport of rare, vintage and antique watercraft.

7.  Do I need to have all the fuel out of the boat before it’s transported?

No, but we do recommend that boats are not transported with absolutely full tanks.  This is to avoid the possibility of fuel spilling out of the fuel tank vents which can lead to damage of the exterior finish.

8.  What is your transportation range?

We can deliver by truck anywhere in the Continental United States and Canada.

9.  Should my boat be shrink-wrapped for transport?

Generally most of the boats we transport are shrink-wrapped.  There are many factors that should be considered when deciding weather to shrink wrap for transport or not: age and condition of boat, time of year, expected weather at time of transport, and possibility of damage from flying debris.  We have developed a wrapping procedure that both protects and preserves the varnished mahogany as well.  Please inquire as to cost and timing of our shrink-wrap service.

10.  What if I need my boat moved now, but I don’t have a destination finalized?

As Mahogany Bay deals in a large volume of vintage boats, we usually have storage space available.  Contact us for details.
